Bone Cancer
In recent months the charity has come across a respected surgeon at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore who starting a trial for the treatment of sarcomas with PDT, in conjunction with surgery.
The next step is PDT for bone cancers. Again, the bulk of cancerous bone would be removed, with the PDT used to destroy any cancer at the margins.
The trial is designed to compare PDT and surgery with radiotherapy and surgery.
For the patients, the advantage of PDT may be obvious. It will be a one-off treatment with the PDT, compared to several weeks of radiotherapy.
This is a hugely significant development for PDT.
